History
NEW MOON Impact Productions was initially founded by impact producers visiting Del York Creative Academy (DCA) in Africa for a cultural exchange in 2019—a program for which they were honored with a MIPAD award that same year. The producers selected for this program had a track record of success in impact-oriented projects, and their shared experiences and vision became the inspiration for founding NEW MOON.
The purpose of NEW MOON was further cemented by the dramatic outcry and urgent need generated by the coronavirus outbreak, as well as by co-founder and CSO Melissa Lahti’s discovery of a Statesman Journal article and additional research into her late grandfather, Travis "Bunky" McFee—a nonviolent war hero in World War II. Bunky upheld his principles when enlisting as a young man and, like many nonviolent participants, was sent to the frontlines of Normandy on D-Day. During boot camp, he became beloved among his bunkmates for his musical talents and optimistic spirit—Bunky was a touring bluegrass musician before the war. His charisma and bilingual abilities earned him a prime position as a military general’s driver.
On D-Day, while carrying out his duties, Bunky witnessed soldiers drowning before they could even reach the shore, their heavy gear pulling them under. Thinking quickly, he began stripping flotation materials from amphibious vehicles and throwing them into the water to act as buoys—an innovation that saved hundreds, possibly over a thousand, lives. He was shot in action but later reported that he didn’t feel the bullet in the moment, so focused was he on the task of saving lives. In a time of war and destruction, Bunky remained true to his principles, found an innovative solution, and took action to save others under immense duress. His story embodies the spirit of NEW MOON, and we strive to honor his legacy by seeking innovative solutions to save and support human lives today.
